As most of you have already known, Anggun is going to be the narrator of a documentary by Alastair Fothergill, chronicling animal migration encompassing the whole Earth, from the Arctic Circle to Antartica.
The documentary has been shown on TV in a number of countries including its home, the UK. While that version - called "Planet Earth" - was a mini-series, the one Anggun's narrating is a feature-length film to be released in theaters across France on October 10, 2007. The direct translation of the French title would be "A Day on Planet Earth."
I found a few interviews (in French) on the web that she gave as the narrator of "Un Jour sur Terre."

The Alice Interview (9 October 2007) http://cinema.aliceadsl.fr/interview/detail/default.aspx?articleid=AR00020045
Anggun, narratrice de UN JOUR SUR TERRE Anggun, narrator of UN JOUR SUR TERRE (A Day on Earth - Official English title: Planet Earth)
We know Anggun as a singer. As an international celebrity, she uses her fame to serve humanitarian charities, and notably works together with the UN while being an ambassador. She sees her involvement with UN JOUR SUR TERRE as a continuation of that action. She also told us about her uncommon work for this project
Why did you agree to record your voice for the French narration of UN JOUR SUR TERRE? They offered me [the project] and I was quite curious, because the tradition has been that the voice behind animal documentaries be a man's voice. They told me that the film talks about the nourishing Earth, about three mothers caring for their small ones. In short, it was a story of survival. I understood then the logic behind using a female voice. Also, I have seen some clips of the film - I did not need anymore convincing to take the offer. We have never seen a feature-length film of this quality, with this style of filming, this approach, and its message.
The connection between nature and the life-giving mother; is it more visible in the Indonesian culture than here in the West? Oui. Yes. In France, in Paris, where I live, what we call "gardens" doesn't have that many flowers! (laughs). In fact, in Indonesia, it is part of our education. They taught us to respect all that brethes: the animals, the plants. But other than that, we have to respect also the spirits that live in nature. Unfortunately, in countries like Indonesia, when one talks about the environment, nobody really pays any attention yet because there are other more important problems. Being a well-known artist allows me to touch the public, thus to me, it is also my responisibility to lend my voice for such messages, like those carried by UN JOUR SUR TERRE. It's a responsibilibity as [I am] a citizen of this world.
Your voice in the film is very different than that we normally hear in animal documentaries: yours is very soft, you whispers. Did you have an idea of what exactly they wanted you to do? I proposed the idea after reading through the text and watching the film. I am currently pregnant and I am telling a story of mothers in UN JOUR SUR TERRE. Thus, I didn't want to do something academic. Finally, there were many moments in the film that moved [me] so, hence, why not play on that? It's as if I whisper a story on each of the viewers' ear. It's probably a very Indonesian approach! UN JOUR SUR TERRE does't blame the public, neither does it give out any lessons. The softness of this narration influenced me. I believe that softness can achieve something stronger than rapidity or brutality.
By which part of the film were you moved the most? The final image, when the bear was swimming, looking right and left, he was in the middle of such immense body of water. It was the essence of the film: watching the animals' survival. And we're responsible of this situation. I wonder then, at what moment conscience will take place. This is quite personal to me right there.
Do you still have hope? Could the film awaken the conscience or is it already a historical film about something that's in the process of dissapearing? The objective of this film is to awaken people's conscience. You have to see it. I'm sure that once you do, everyone would want to change things. There is a strong spirit in UN JOUR SUR TERRE. Thus, I'm still optimistic. Obvioulsy, a film or a song cannot change the world but it can change a few people.

It's a nice interview and a wondefful message from Anggun that deserves to be spread everywhere. Because that movie is really raising important questions. I do agree about that very moving moment of the film, with the bear, around the end. It made me cry, just thinking, that because of mankind's unconsciousness, so many are disappearing....
Of course, people who are going to watch that film are going to be moved and will want to change things. And I'm sure more and more people take responsibility individually .... BUT WHEN ARE THE US, CHINA, INDIA GOING TO CHANGE THEIR DESTRUCTIVE BEHAVIOUR ????? WHEN ARE THE BIG INDUSTRIALS GOING TO STOP RUINING THE PLANET, BY RELEAVING DEADLY PRODUCTS IN OCEANS, RVIERS, ANYWHERE JUST TO SAVE MONEY AND HAVE MORE FOR THE MOMENT ?
Still too many people don't give a d-mn sh-t about tomorrow, the planet, how could they care less. What they care for, is today, only today, and what they HAVE in their account. When is that going to change ? It's good to raise conscience among the mass .... still the mass need examples.
Thanks for letting me vent, it had been a while. Thanks to Alastair Fothergill for making such a movie. Thanks to Anggun for her participation. Thanks to everyone who cares and tries to make a difference by making efforts in changing the habits.

Yesterday evening I went to the cinema to see "Un jour sur Terre". It's a great film and Anggun is really a great narrator. The message is Earth is ill but we can save it if we take care. |

Is this film animalist or ecologist or both? Is it about the life of wild animals or about the hard condition of our planet? I would like to understand better if the message the film gives is a sort of "save the animals" or "save the planet"... They are similar messages but they are slightly different!!! Anyway, I'm a steady animalist, it's a kind of religion for me, and obviously I'm very happy that Anggun have taken part in this work. I'm sure that many of us fans of Anggun love animals and nature, now I feel we have to get the film/Anggun message and to spread it as much as possible, through our words and acts. |

I don't know if this is allow to me, if not I ask the moderators to erase this topic. I wan't to remind you that there are many associations who fight "for a living planet", who take the part of innocence against the human terror. This associations need our help!!! When we are going to give an help or to do charity, our first thought should be for animals, that are the only who really need our support, and that are the only who can't ask for it with words!!! They can ask for it only with their sad and suffering eyes...

I've seen the film and i think the main message is "Save the Earth to save animals..... and humans". All is bound !
Tomorrow in France WWF-France ask all people to switch off lights during five minutes (between five to eight and eight in the evening) for sending message to our government. |
